To optimize their agricultural practices and reduce their environmental impact, farmers adopt specific practices such as planting cover-crops to store soil nitrogen. There is today a critical need for an operationalservice to accurately and easily assess the amount of organic nitrogen fixed by cover-crops to optimize farmers’ inputs. With the CoverSat project, TerraNIS aims to develop a new and innovative service based on the use of a large amount of data (including satellite image processing), intelligence algorithms and end-users requirements. With a cross-sectorial approach and gathering actors from different kind of entities, the project will accelerate the development of this new value chain. The product is a spatialized estimation of cover-crops nitrogen content based on Sentinel-1 & Sentinel-2 images and in-situ data. Several tools will be experimented on a representative dataset and accuracy of the models will be assessed to provide valuable information for the next steps of the service implementation.
