The VIVID project concerns the technological progress of a computer vision system applied to the autonomous driving of a robotic machine, used for automatic data collection and spraying in vineyards. The computer vision technology is here used as a complementary tool for autonomous driving based on GPS and/or LIDAR, with the aim to make the latter more reliable and safer, by the automatic recognition of the tree-row path into the vineyard and of emergency scenes, such as the presence of humans on the path or of other dangerous obstacles or ditches. The project includes the development and the training, through the direct application in the field, of an image analysis software and the design and implementation of a vision-based software for autonomous driving.
